Gulcin Anil in Turkish Directory
Gulcin Anil was born in 1944 in Turkey. The family, on both sides, was from the Aegean port city of Izmir where she completed her high school education. Anil married young and raised a family before returning to the love of her youth: painting. Twenty years ago, she started working at various ateliers and soon afterward she was exhibiting her own work. Since then, Anil has made a splash in the Turkish art scene with her brave use of the brush and paint and the emotional richness of her paintings. For her paintings, all in oil and incredibly three dimensional, Gulcin Anil chooses themes that are suitable to the motion, confusion and exuberance she likes to convey in her work. Her first series, “Boats and Seagulls”, expressed all these as well as her love of the sea and days in the past when her greatest joy was to go sailing in the Sea of Marmara and along the Bosporus. This was followed by “People, Instruments and Music”, a series lauded by art reviewer Gungor Taner as ,“ They make all of us hear the sound of music.” Anil took some time to internalize her ascending mastership of color and brush and her own status in Turkey’s art world. The result was the series of “Women with Wings”, “Mother Goddesses” and “Nature’s Bounty.” These paintings celebrated women’s power to create and to endure. Various trips to Asian and African countries familiarized her with the search for sacred that has always been part of any society. This search may appear in different forms and rituals but is identical in its core. These evaluations led to the “Budha” paintings and soon afterward to the series of “Whirling Dervishes.” Currently, Anil is working on the series she named “The Color of Dance.” These paintings depict people from all over the world, the Japanese, the Indians, the South Americans, the Spanish, the Africans, performing their local dances in the dazzling brightness of local dress. Paintings from this group have been selected to be exhibited in Italy. In the past twenty years, Anil has had solo exhibits in the Turkish cities of Istanbul,Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, Konya and Bodrum. She has also had her work shown in various exhibitions in Europe and the United States.
