The origin of the SABUNCAKIS Family, who was and still is part of the Pera or Beyoglu trade life, since 1874, is Crete Island. The pillar of the family, ISTAVRO SABUNCAKIS, was born in Crete and after he completed his education on soap manufacturing he established a soap factory on the Island. The time he started to be known with the trade name SABUNCAKIS, great pressure and and a series of revolts that occured on the island forced him to look for a new location for the soap factory that he was trying to develop and improve. His investigations led him to Lesbos Island (Midilli). As a consequence he moved to Lesbos, in 1848. He used all his opportunities and established a new and much more modern soap factory.
