Fethiye is the ancient Telmossos, with a history going back to the Bronze age. It was already an independent city by 1500 B.C. and remaind so untilAlexander the Great conquered the whole area in 334 B.C. In 44 B.C., it became part of Lycian Union under roman rule. Later (by the 14th. century A.D.) the towns name changed to Megri, but it only took its present name after the of the Turkish Republic in 1923, in honor of Fethi Bey, Turkeys most famous early pilot. Above the town, within walking distance, are rock tombs cut into the limestone slope, the main one dating from 450 B.C. and dedicated to the Prince Amyntas. Some of the tombs in this area are even older. Next to this Necropolis is Acropolis Hill, on which Hellenistic and Roman stonwork have been built by the Knights of St. John. The Fethiye Archeological Museum, founded in 1965, contains artefacts from the Lycian, Roman and Byzantine eras including items from the mausoleums of nearby Tlos. The Karagözler district has beautiful views over the bay and provides good, centrally-located hotel and pension accommodation. Çalis Beach, just 5 km. from the center.Maybe, too, the chance to see Turkeys famous sea turtels, Caretta Caretta, laying their eggs. Fethiye has a typical Mediterranean climate, hot and dry in summer, warm and rainy in winter. Daytime temperatures are normally between 30-35 degrees in summer and generally stay above 10 degrees in winter. The sea temperature never falls below 16 degrees. Fethiye is 50 km. from Dalaman Airport. The larger Antalya Airport can be reached in three hours. It can be reached by private car or bus.
